Ray Rankine

Paintings

Opening Saturday 8th December 6-9pm
Until 22nd December 2007

In recent works I have used mark, colour and texture to explore a range of abstract or semi-abstract images. Starting points vary from coastal areas to demolition sites and urban graffiti, and I am particularly interested in anything which contains some evidence of human activity-the accidental colour and texture combinations that are the result of everyday random events and which we often walk past without a second glance.

These paintings attempt to blend these elements into new forms. They sometimes appear to echo the rhythms and structures of landscapes or buildings and sometimes remain purely abstract. At some point in its making a painting will determine for itself the path it is taking, and in allowing this to happen, I attempt to reflect some of the processes found in the original material. There is a combination of planning, spontaneity and sometimes seemingly radical change.

In the end, the task remains the same - how to make some marks on a flat surface acquire enough mystery to tempt us to want to pause and look for a moment, and maybe come back and look again.

Ray Rankine studied painting in Belfast and Edinburgh and taught for

He now divides his time between painting and producing artwork for television,
