Svetlana Belenkaya
‘Functional and Dysfunctional’

9th-24th July
Opening Sat 9th 6-9pm

Originally from the former Soviet Union (Ukraine), Svetlana Belenkaya studied Product Design and Ceramics at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio, won a ceramics workshop scholarship (working with Julia Galloway), and first place in the Comite Colbert Parfume Lanvin Design Competition in France. She now lives and works in South London, designing and making functional and non-functional ceramics, with an emphasis on form, colour, and humour. Each piece is conceived as a whole, with the surface design integral to the form from the beginning of the making process.

These pieces are finely made in terracotta clay, through a combination of throwing and hand building. The surfaces are then worked with coloured slips, to produce quirky imagery that evokes a complex mix of cultural echoes from both the east and the west: the paintings of Paul Klee, ‘kitsch’ imagery, and contemporary cartoons and animation.

Svetlana will be taking up residence in the gallery for two weeks, both to exhibit and sell finished pieces, and to create work during the course of the show. Visitors will be able to see her working methods in progress and to talk to her about her ideas and techniques. This will be a unique opportunity to learn about the art of ceramics, from the initial idea through to the finished piece.

Some of Svetlana’s work will also be on view in the St Luke’s Hospice shop in South Harrow, as part of ‘Artstop’ 16th-24th July.

Gallery opening: Fri 6-10pm, Sat & Sun 12-6pm or by appointment.
