“Colour Connections” is a body of work produced during the period of time when I was involved with a group of artists working together on a journal project. (A journal is an artist’s visual diary and can include sketches, notes, ideas, experiments and the kinds of personal responses that are not normally seen by a wider audience). This group was brought together by mixed media artist Seiwa Cunningham who was inspired by a similar project she saw in the United States. The journal project was envisaged as a way for artists to interact, despite living in different parts of the UK and, indeed, in different countries.
Our theme was colour and each artist selected their colour or colour-related theme to begin in their own journal, to be posted to the next artist on the list two weeks later. This continued throughout the year with each journal moving from artist to artist. Each journal grew and evolved as the artists gradually took their turn to interpret the colour in response to the physical quality of the book they received and to the work produced by the previous artists which it contained.
It was a challenging and inspirational project, so much so, that I made several variations of each of my own journal entries which then inspired further pieces of work which developed my own themes. My work stems from a fascination for the physicality and spirituality of the human individual within the collective consciousness that is the city which both sustains and threatens. The use of recycled and everyday objects in a fragmented and disjointed way is the perfect means for me of expressing that tension between organic and technological energies.
Examples of the journals will also be on display at the time of the exhibition.
