‘Art is
my language, my currency; I use it with fluency and in a deeply
personal way, and have throughout my life, from as far back
as I can remember. I used art as a natural tool in the rearing
of my own children
from a young age.’
Jane Landes trained as a painter. Her large abstract canvasses
were concerned with colour and the physical process of mark-making
with paint. Over time her practise has broadened, and she has
come to use printmaking, textiles and stitch as additional mark-making
techniques. To some extent this process has been stimulated
by educational work that she has done. Many artists teach (in
one way or another), and the process is often one that opens
up new avenues of interest and research for them in their own
practise.
The work in this show is painterly, though strictly speaking
most of the pieces are collages. The physicality of the processes
used is evident
in the work. Stitch is used as a means to draw marks, and the
evolution of each piece is intuitive, with each successive mark
or colour dictating the intensity and place of the next.
Currently studying for an MA in Art Therapy at Hertfordshire
University, Jane is a member of Prism (contemporary artists
incorporating textiles in their work), and has exhibited in
and around London over the last five years, as well as being
involved in an extensive range of educational projects.
