10 – 25 th September 2005
‘I try to capture how my dog is feeling at the moment of pose, stance and movement. I imagine being Sophie or Chelsea myself to express them ore vividly. When I review my final work, however, I recognize that the various expressions of my dog portraits represent the condition of my own feeling at particular moments of my life.’ Tomoko Bontly.
If you visited Take Away Two here at the gallery before Christmas, you may remember wonderful ceramic dogs-large and small, made by Tomoko Bontly. I am delighted to have more ofher work, and to show the ceramics with drawings and linoprints.
Originally from Japan, and trained in both children’s literature and ceramics, Tomoko’s portraits of her dogs are acutely observed and yet freely executed. She combines an extraordinary empathy for the animals with a rich visual sense, and an extensive interest in the craft, materials and techniques of her chosen medium. These are both enchanting portraits, and yet have a fantastic quality to them, which reminds us that they are also ceramic pieces and lino prints with rich decorative qualities.
Tomoko completed a degree in ceramics at Westminster University in 2004, and was selected for the New Designers fair at the Business Design Centre, in the same year. In 2004 Alun Graves (curator at the Victoria & Albert museum), selected her work for ‘Curator’s Choice’, in the Crafts Council Gallery Shop.
